断断续续地、走马观花地读完了美国作家德莱赛的《嘉莉妹妹》。
嘉莉妹妹从乡下去芝加哥投奔自己的姐姐，在火车上认识了推销员杜洛埃，杜洛埃口若悬河，滔滔不绝地讲起了自己的见闻与所感，另初出家门的嘉莉大开眼界，并留下了嘉莉的联系方式。到了芝加哥，工作并不好找，而嘉莉的姐姐也生活拮据，无意收留嘉莉。于是，自然而然地，杜洛埃与嘉莉同居了，杜洛埃给她提供衣服与美食。一个偶然的机会，一个酒店的经理赫斯渥与嘉莉相识了。
赫斯渥对嘉莉非常迷恋，经常到她的住处去看望她。渐渐地，赫斯渥发现自己离不开嘉莉了。身为经理的便利条件，携走了酒店的一万多快钱，同时诱骗嘉莉与其逃往加拿大，然后又去了纽约。

在所有的钱花光以后，赫斯渥不得不去找工作了，当时电车的工人正在罢工，赫斯渥去应聘司机，结果不难想象，只干了一天，就被罢工的工人给逼走了。后来，又给酒店的厨师打过下手，又病倒了。身无分文的赫斯渥开始了乞讨生活。
遥想当年在芝加哥时，赫斯渥衣冠楚楚，温文尔雅，稳健自信，而在纽约的赫斯渥却衣衫褴褛，目光呆滞，疾病缠身，到了后来的开煤气自杀。不能不让人深思。
中国有句古话，落魄的凤凰不如鸡。况且，赫斯渥到底原来是不是凤凰，还有待考察。造成这赫斯渥自杀一结果的原因，不能排除社会的因素，也不能排除他自身的惰性，但是我认为，最主要的原因就像德莱赛在小说中说的那样：一般的金丝雀在被捕时是相当坚强的，但是在镀金的鸟笼里关了几年，就丧失了独立生活的能力。家狗倘使舒舒服服地养到中年，再把它感到丛林里去自寻食物，就会饿死。家狗，要是一生下来就被赶出去，就会变成狼，或者是十分像狼，只是外形上有些不同而已。所以，像赫斯渥这样的人，已经丰衣足食，无忧无虑地生活到了中年，已经丧失了谋生的技能，当他撇开原来的生活，再去独自打拼时，就不难想象，失败是在所难免。

《嘉莉妹妹》一书刚看完，就是美国作家西奥多*德莱塞的作品。在谈感想之前，首先对故事叙述一下，同时加深对作品的理解比较合适。
故事是这样的：
18岁的嘉罗琳（嘉莉）离开自己的父母，到芝加哥找姐姐，想谋求一份适合自己的工作。虽然之前曾经去过姐姐家一次，但毕竟对城市生活非常陌生。在火车上，被推销员德鲁埃认识，互相交换了在芝加哥的地址。
到达姐姐家后，找工作并非非常的顺利，曾经在一个每周收入只有四块半的鞋店工作，但是，在给姐姐交完每周四块钱的食宿费后，只有五角钱的使用空间，而这些，并没有阻挡住对城市灯红酒绿生活的向往，富人生活的诱惑始终在吸引着她，但是，出路在哪里呢？
由于工作的辛苦，淋雨病到后，这唯一的工作也就没有了。姐夫无法得到应得的食宿费补贴家用，让嘉罗琳产生回老家的念头。推销员德鲁埃在找到嘉莉后，了解她的情况，愿意资助她，又鼓起了她继续待在城市的念头。嘉莉给姐姐留了一张纸条后，就和德鲁埃一起在租住一个公寓里。
从此以后，嘉莉就在德鲁埃的影响下，开始去适应城市生活，去看演出、吃饭等，此时的她，认为有钱的日子真舒服，也感到非常的幸福。这是她到芝加哥之后第一次感到幸福，特别是透过阳台的窗户，看到路边走过的，曾和她在鞋店工作类似的女工时，她非常满足目前的物质生活。
通过德鲁埃，嘉莉也认识了酒店经理赫斯特伍德。相对对城市生活不太陌生的嘉莉发现，赫斯特伍德其实比德鲁埃更风趣幽默，更善解人意。其实要知道，他们两人的区别，主要是由于工作的不同，塑造的人物性格也就不同，而这些，嘉莉她不知道。

虽然离开了芝加哥，但是，侦探的到来还是让赫斯特伍德交出了大部分公款，同时，为了避免遇到昔日的熟人，他们到达纽约。
纽约的生活水平，让赫斯特伍德认为必须找到一份合适的工作，否则的话，留下的钱无法长久满足嘉莉日常的开销，毕竟嘉莉没有太多城市工作的经验，生活的压力目前不应该让她有。
赫斯特伍德把留下钱的一大部分与别人合伙开了一个酒店，他负责经营。工作忙碌的他，渐渐没有时间陪在嘉莉身边，嘉莉打发时间，认识了新来的邻居万斯先生和夫人。他们三人会到百老汇吃饭、看演出。嘉莉意识到，在百老汇大街上游玩的人，才是真正的有钱人，他们不是单单地来游玩，是来摆阔的，让嘉莉非常羡慕。

Far more different from other heroines, Carrie was not a plain pure angel like Snow-white, nor was she brave enough to be a heroine of revolutionist or even a reformer, nor was she so clever as to be a successful career woman who start from scratch.

And this was not merely a dream. Because she had large eyes which can earn others’ sympathy, even love. She had wonderful figure which can win others’ hearts. However, anything she got, anywhere she reached, had not come from her ambition. Things happened, and then she accepted. The society was developing rapidly and the people's living standards were also improving.Yes,the prosperity appeared.But on the other hand,the gap between the poor and the rich was strengthened.While some people were playing and drinking,the other people were working,even begging.Behind the happiness,hiding much misery.Facing all of these,I am confused whether I should happy about the development of the society or I should sad about the cruel.
But I know I will give much sympathy to all of these people,no matter they rich or poor.I am sorry that the rich have lost their good morality,their sympathy and I think they are blank in their spiritThe poor,of course,are busy all the day for supporting themselves and their family,no time enjoying the life.All of them are the sacrifices of the society.

第一次在一周还是两周的时间里读完了一本长篇小说《嘉莉妹妹》
首先是女主嘉莉，从哥伦比亚，背井离乡去投奔远在芝加哥的姐姐，一个初入社会的，单纯的，毫无社会经验的小姑娘，初入大城市，一切对她来说都是那么美好。可她的姐姐姐夫似乎对于妹妹的来访并没有那么高兴，她们担心的只是嘉莉会是他们的生活开销更大，不能理解，妹妹拜访亲姐姐，居然还要付房租，他姐夫更是在她到后几天，就要求她去找工作，而她姐姐更是一个典型的家庭主妇，对丈夫的一言一行都唯命是从，她已经没有自己的主见了。

在假期里，《嘉莉妹妹》这本书是名著，在文章中有许多的道理和人生哲理。这本书使我受益匪浅。这本书的作者是美国著名的现实主义作家——西奥多·德莱塞。
这本书主要讲了：嘉莉十八岁那年她就独自一人从自己的家乡离开，去往芝加哥生活。她向往物质生活，所以才离开家乡的。
她的姐姐敏妮住在芝加哥公寓的凡步仑街，嘉莉去姐姐家住。她姐姐家很简陋房间的墙是拼凑的纸糊，颜色很不协调。地板上铺的是草席，只有起居室铺了一块薄薄的破地毯。嘉莉在姐姐家的附近找了自己能干的一份工作，她自己长的很漂亮，推销员杜洛埃很喜欢她，所以嘉莉变成了杜洛埃的情妇。但是后来嘉莉又由于更大的诱惑，跟随自己住的酒店里的经理赫斯渥私奔。
在一次很好的机会中，嘉莉竟然办成了走红的演员，在上流的社会中，完成了她的愿望。让赫斯渥陷入贫困，并又残忍的把他推上了绝路。
读完这本书，我觉得嘉莉只是沉浸在自己追求的生活和想象之中，她从未替别人着想过。她的这种性格是由于贫困所造成的。自己一无所有，却只是期求这幸福。

《嘉莉妹妹》是美国杰出的批判现实主义小说家德莱塞的作品，讲述的是一个天生纯真的少女如何从贫困到上流社会的故事。
嘉莉来自偏远地区，她来到自己从小向往的城市投靠自己的姐姐，可没想姐姐家也是穷困潦倒，现实的困境无法满足自己内心对雍容繁华的向往和对金钱的欲望。
为了给姐姐房租，她只能去做女工，领几块钱的工资维持生计，最终她决定离开姐姐家，和在来这座城市时火车上遇到的德鲁埃一起生活。
德鲁埃是个有钱的销售员，他被嘉莉的纯真美丽吸引，而嘉莉又被他的金钱所吸引，为了过上流社会安逸的生活，她与德鲁埃一起生活，享受不用拼搏花力气就拥有的安逸生活。
她渐渐融入上流社会生活，忘记了曾经的贫困落魄，那也是她绝不想再回去的生活。
后来，她遇到了德鲁埃的朋友赫斯特伍德，一个有妇之夫，还有两个孩子，嘉莉却浑然不知，他们相爱计谋离开德鲁埃，德鲁埃发现后告诉嘉莉赫斯特伍德的真实情况后搬出住所，嘉莉气急败坏不想再理赫斯特伍德。
一天晚上，赫斯特伍德带上了工作地酒吧的一万元，骗上嘉莉来到纽约，他们开始新的生活，赫斯特伍德在纽约的事业却没有原来城市那么顺畅，他们越来越拮据，最后他失业天天待在家里，嘉莉开始自己找工作，她凭借戏剧天赋逐步获得好的收入，赫斯特伍德只有靠着嘉莉生活。
后来嘉莉离开了赫斯特伍德，事业高升，又走向上流社会，万人追捧，而赫斯特伍德却穷困潦倒，沦为乞丐，最后自杀。
嘉莉妹妹之前一个爱慕虚荣的女孩，为了虚荣心，出卖了自己，为了上流社会和金钱而安于享受。
但在最后，生活所迫，她凭借自己的努力与聪明，登上戏剧舞台，不断地成功，不断赢得喝彩。
而赫斯特伍德为了爱情丢弃了家庭与道德，最后又丢弃了爱情，不思进取，最后穷困潦倒，也反映了当时社会就业与生活的艰辛。
在嘉莉妹妹的故事中，我受益颇多。我们需要的是靠自己的双手劳动养活自己，爱情是伟大，却不能在其中丧失自我。
欲望和虚荣都会有，但我们要靠自己的努力去满足。
在欲望面前，人们经常迷失自己，如果只剩下一具空壳，那"活下去有什么用".
我们要用理想与信念充实大脑，努力与奋斗满足生活。生于忧患，死于安乐。
